Obverse description The Mexican national arms occupy the central field: an eagle displayed in left profile, perched upon a prickly-pear cactus growing from a rocky islet, devouring a serpent clutched in its beak and talons. The device is rendered in high relief with finely engraved feather detail, and is flanked below by a wreath of oak and laurel branches tied with a ribbon. The arc legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS curves along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals. The coin border is formed by a continuous series of diagonal milled denticles.

Reverse description The left-facing bust of Cuauhtémoc, last Aztec emperor, dominates the central field, rendered in bold relief in a stylised pre-Columbian artistic manner. He is depicted wearing an elaborate feathered headdress adorned with circular ornaments and draped plumage, and a large circular ear ornament. The name CUAUHTEMOC appears in small capitals beneath the truncation. Surrounding the bust, the denomination CINCO PESOS arcs across the upper field, while the weight, fineness, mint year, and mint mark — 30 GRAMOS . LEY 0.900 . Mo — arc around the lower and lateral fields. The border is formed by a continuous series of diagonal milled denticles matching the obverse.
