Obverse description The obverse is dominated by a finely engraved portrait vignette on the left, showing a young woman in three-quarter profile wearing an ornate headdress, executed in detailed intaglio style. The centre carries the bank title EL BANCO AMERICANO in bold lettering, with the denomination CINCO PESOS rendered in large script above the legend 'Pagará al portador a la vista' and 'en monedas corrientes'. Numeral 5 counters appear at upper left and upper right, with the date and place of issue 'BARRANQUILLA, 1 de Enero de 1883' printed in the lower centre, alongside a signature line for EL DIRECTOR; the note is a Specimen as indicated by the overprint at the top.
