Banco de Valparaíso was one of the major Chilean private issuing banks operating under the 1860 Ley de Bancos, which permitted chartered banks to issue their own notes backed by gold or silver reserves held on deposit. The American Bank Note Company's involvement here is unsurprising — ABNC dominated South American private bank contracts throughout the 1870s and 1880s, and Chilean banks were among their steadiest clients.
The series was rendered obsolete by Chile's 1925 banking reforms, which centralized note issue under the newly created Banco Central de Chile. Most private bank stocks were called in and destroyed at that point.
