Obverse description The Costa Rican national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield bearing three volcanoes rising above a maritime scene, with a rising sun at left and seven stars arranged in an arc across the upper portion of the shield. The shield is surmounted by a scroll device and flanked by laurel branches that curve upward from the base. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA runs along the upper periphery, while the date 1873 appears in the lower exergue beneath the branches. The entire design is framed by a distinctive dentilated border.
