Tamarite de Litera is a small town in the Aragonese province of Huesca, and this 5 pesetas note was issued by its local collectivity during the Spanish Civil War — one of hundreds of emergency municipal and anarcho-syndicalist issues that flooded Catalonia and Aragon between 1936 and 1939 when the Republican economy fragmented to the village level. The CNT-affiliated collectives that ran many of these communities printed their own scrip to manage internal exchange after coin disappeared from circulation almost overnight.

The thick card stock was a deliberate practical choice — thin paper wore out too quickly for notes cycling through a single small community's hands daily.
