Soneja was a village of fewer than a thousand inhabitants when its local Popular Executive Committee — one of hundreds of revolutionary bodies that seized municipal authority across Republican Spain during the Civil War — issued emergency cardboard currency in 1937. The collapse of the peseta's purchasing power and the hoarding of metal coinage created acute shortages of small change across the Republican zone, forcing municipalities, trade unions, and even individual businesses to print their own.
The unlisted status in both Garí and Turró is telling. Many of these provincial Valencian emissions were produced in such limited quantities, and survived in such small numbers, that systematic cataloging remains incomplete decades later.
