San Ginés de Vilasar — now Canet de Mar — was a small coastal town north of Barcelona where cooperative scrip of this kind circulated as genuine local currency during periods when small-denomination coinage was scarce or hoarded. La Fraternal was one of dozens of Catalan worker cooperatives that issued their own vales or tokens in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, typically redeemable only at the cooperative's own store or among member businesses.
The AL reference places this within Turró's *Catàleg de paper moneda local de Catalunya*, the standard authority for this material. Thick card stock construction was deliberate — it resisted wear in daily shop-counter use better than thin banknote paper.
