During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination coinage across the Republican zone prompted hundreds of local cooperatives, municipalities, and trade unions to issue their own emergency paper currency. Palamós, a small fishing and cork-industry town on the Costa Brava, was no exception. L'Equitativa was a workers' consumer cooperative, and its 5 pessetes note functioned as a local scrip redeemable within its own commercial network — not legal tender in any broader sense.
The thick paper stock is consistent with locally sourced materials common to Catalan emergency issues of 1937–38, when purpose-made banknote paper was simply unavailable to small issuers. AL#2083 is among the scarcer cooperative issues from the Baix Empordà comarca.
