Motril is a coastal town in Granada province, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's 1936 decree authorizing local authorities to produce small-denomination notes to replace hoarded coinage. The 5 pesetas denomination is on the higher end for this type of municipal issue — most localities concentrated their emissions on céntimos and 1–2 peseta values where the coinage shortage was most acute.
