Chiprana is a small municipality in Zaragoza province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local committee issued emergency paper money in 1936–37 when coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent in rural Aragon. These locally-produced notes were not backed by any formal reserve and carried authority only as far as the committee's writ ran, which in many cases meant a few square kilometers.
Survival rates for Chiprana issues are low. Small-town Republican committee notes were rarely preserved deliberately, and many were rendered worthless and discarded after Nationalist forces took the region in 1938.
