Anglès is a small municipality in the Selva comarca of Girona, and notes like this one came out of the acute coin shortage that paralyzed small-town commerce across Catalonia and the rest of Republican Spain within weeks of the July 1936 military uprising. With the central government slow to respond and metal coinage disappearing from circulation almost immediately, local entities — cooperatives, town councils, trade unions — printed their own fractional and low-denomination paper to keep markets functioning.

The square stamp is the distinguishing validation mark that separates this emission from otherwise similar Anglesense issues catalogued under AL#2208.
