| Additional information |
Alfonso XIII was an infant when these coins were struck — born in 1886 to a posthumous reign, he wouldn't reach his majority until 1902. Spain produced coinage in his name throughout his minority under the regency of his mother, María Cristina of Austria, who governed through a period of accelerating colonial crisis. The 1892 issue coincided with the quadricentennial celebrations of Columbus's first voyage, a moment of nationalist pageantry that masked the empire's actual fragility.
Cuba and the Philippines were already restive. Within six years of this issue's final striking, both were gone.
