Obverse lettering ALFONSO XII POR LA G·DE DIOS * 1884 *
Reverse description The crowned quartered arms of Spain occupy the centre of the field, displaying castles and lions in the upper quarters, the Arms of Aragon and Navarre in the lower quarters, and an escutcheon bearing the fleur-de-lis of the House of Bourbon at the base. The shield is flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, each wrapped with a scroll bearing the motto PLUS ULTRA. The mint assayer initials M·S· appear to the lower left and M· to the lower right. The circular legend REY CONSTL. DE ESPAÑA arcs across the upper field, while the denomination 5 PESETAS is inscribed in large letters along the lower exergue, all within a toothed border.
