Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, diademed and wearing the George IV State Diadem, as designed by Raphael David Maklouf. The truncation of the bust is cleanly rendered, and the portrait is set against a flat field. The encircling legend reads ISLE OF MAN ELIZABETH II PM 1985 in Latin script.

Reverse description Central design featuring a cushag plant (Manx national flower, Senecio jacobaea) displayed on a heraldic shield of the chancree type, incorporating a lance aperture at the base in the style of a bouche battle shield, as engraved by Leslie Lindsay. The shield is surrounded by elaborate scrollwork and foliate ornamental mantling that fills the field to the inner rim. The denomination numeral 5 appears at the base of the shield in the lower field, serving as the sole legend on this face.
