Reverse description Central device comprises a crowned Scottish thistle in full bloom, its spiny leaves spreading symmetrically across the field, surmounted by a Tudor crown in high relief. The denomination numeral '5' appears in the lower field beneath the thistle, while the legend FIVE PENCE arcs around the upper portion of the design. A beaded inner border runs the full circumference of the reverse. The composition, designed by Christopher Ironside, is rendered with exceptional crispness against the mirror-polished proof field, exemplifying the emblematic heraldic style adopted for British decimal coinage.
