Reverse description Central device comprising a thistle royally crowned, serving as the heraldic badge of Scotland, rendered in fine relief against a plain field. The word FIVE PENCE arcs above the crowned thistle as a curved legend, while the numeral 5 appears below the central device as the denomination. The design was engraved by Christopher Ironside and is characteristic of the small-format five pence type introduced in 1990.
