| Additional information |
Saint Helena and Ascension operated as a single British Overseas Territory for currency purposes until Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha was reconstituted as a unified territory in 2009. The small-type reduction of this denomination mirrored the Royal Mint's 1990 downsizing of the UK 5 pence, a change driven by vending machine economics and public complaint about the older coin's bulk. Helena's version followed the metropolitan pattern with a lag of several years.
