Obverse description The Portuguese arms — the national shield of the República Portuguesa — occupy the central field, displaying the traditional escutcheon charged with five blue inescutcheons each bearing five silver bezants in saltire, surrounded by a red bordure charged with seven gold castles, all set within a decorative cartouche. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper periphery, with MACAU continuing along the lower right, separated by small five-pointed stars positioned at the lower left and upper right. The date appears in the lower exergual area beneath the shield.
