Obverse description Central field dominated by the elaborate tughra of Sultan Mahmud II, rendered in the characteristic Ottoman calligraphic style with interlocking loops and extended horizontal strokes. Below the tughra, a two-line Arabic legend arranged in horizontal registers gives the mint name and AH date. The inscription reads 'Mahmud, struck in Tripoli West, 1223,' identifying the issuing authority and regnal year. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, consistent with hammered billon coinage of the period. No border ornament is present.

Obverse lettering محمود في ضرب طرابلس غرب ١٢٢٣
(Translation: Mahmud Struck in Tripoli West 1223)
Reverse description Four lines of Arabic inscription fill the field, arranged in horizontal registers divided by raised lines, a layout typical of Ottoman provincial billon coinage. The legend proclaims the imperial titles of the sultan: 'Sultan of the Two Lands and Sovereign of the Two Seas, the Sultan son of the Sultan,' followed by the regnal year numeral 8, denoting the eighth year of Mahmud II's reign. The calligraphy is boldly engraved though somewhat crudely executed, reflecting provincial workshop production in Tripoli. The flan edges are irregular with slight die-shift visible. No additional ornament or border decoration is present.
