The 5 Pahlavi gold coin was among the prestige issues directly tied to Mohammad Reza Shah's aggressive modernization campaign — the so-called White Revolution — which redistributed land, extended voting rights to women, and generated enough political backlash to accelerate the regime's eventual collapse. By the late 1970s, capital flight was acute. Wealthy Iranians and foreign investors converted assets into gold at a frantic pace, and coins like this one were a preferred vehicle.
