Obverse description High-relief bare-headed effigy of King Olav V facing left, modelled with pronounced sculptural depth accentuating the facial features, hair rendered in fine parallel striations. The legend OLAV·V·R is inscribed vertically along the right field in incuse lettering. The portrait fills the flan with considerable prominence, characteristic of a pattern trial intended to assess relief height. No inner border is present.

Reverse description A standing Eurasian elk (Alces alces) faces left in the centre of the field, rendered in naturalistic detail. The denomination 5·ØRE appears above the elk, while the country name NORGE, the mintmark of the Royal Norwegian Mint (crossed pick and hammer ⚒), and the date 1959 are arranged below. The design is enclosed by a plain raised rim.
