Denmark shifted to iron coinage during 1918–1919 as a direct consequence of wartime metal shortages, despite the country's formal neutrality in World War I. The economic disruption of the conflict reached neutral states through trade blockades and commodity scarcity, forcing the Danish mint to abandon bronze. Iron coins from this window corrode aggressively, and survivors in any decent state of preservation are considerably scarcer than mintage figures suggest.
