Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I facing right, rendered in the late antique Byzantine style typical of small copper issues. The imperial effigy displays the characteristic pearl diadem and paludamentum fastened at the shoulder. The surrounding field carries the Latin imperial titulature legend. The flan is irregular and the surfaces show the characteristic roughness of a hammered copper pentanummium struck at the Rome mint. Due to heavy wear and patination, fine details of the facial features are partially obscured.
Obverse script Latin
Obverse lettering D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG
(Translation: D(-ominus) N(-oster) IVSTINIANVS P(-er-)P(-etuus) AVG(-ustus) `Our Lord Justinian, Perpetual Emperor`)
