This piece is a pattern strike — a presentation or trial issue never released for general circulation — produced during Uruguay's civic-military dictatorship, which had seized power in June 1973. The commemorative theme, the 1724 founding of Montevideo, was a deliberate choice by a regime keen to anchor its authority in national origin mythology. Patterns from this period exist in multiple metal variants; KM#70b denotes the silver iteration, distinguished from the copper-nickel circulation strike and a gold presentation piece.
