Pick R42 belongs to the provisional "Giải Phóng" (Liberation) series issued immediately after reunification, when the new authorities needed a circulating currency in the South before a unified national note could be produced. These notes were essentially a stopgap — the "R" prefix in the Pick catalogue denotes their regional, transitional status rather than full central bank issue.
The series was withdrawn within two years, superseded by the unified đồng introduced in 1978. Short circulation windows and subsequent demonetization sweeps mean surviving examples in any condition are underrepresented relative to their actual print run.
