| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin with a central square hole. The obverse bears four Chinese ideograms arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in regular script (kaishu). The characters 常平 (Sangpyeong), referring to the Joseon-era Sangpyeong treasury office, appear in the top and bottom positions, while 通寶 (Tongbo), meaning 'circulating currency,' occupy the right and left positions respectively. The field is plain, with no decorative border or rim embellishment beyond the cast edge. |
