Obverse description Central device depicts the Chinthe, the mythical lion-guardian of Burmese royal tradition, shown passant in high relief with detailed mane, raised forepaw, and curled tail, set upon a plain ground line. Burmese numerals and script legends are arranged in the field surrounding the Chinthe, with the Burmese era date ၁၂၄၀ (1240, corresponding to 1879 CE) inscribed in the lower field. The entire design is contained within a dentilated border running along the coin's rim.
