Obverse description Eight Chinese characters arranged in a grid pattern across the field, reading vertically from top to bottom and right to left. The inscription in the upper right reads 喀什 (Kashgar), the central column reads 光緒 (Guangxu, the reigning emperor), and the lower left reads 伍錢銀圓 (Five Qian Silver Dollar), together conveying the denomination, issuing authority, and mint. The characters are boldly incuse-struck in a calligraphic style typical of Sinkiang provincial coinage. The coin is bordered by a continuous beaded rim.
