The 24th Australian Infantry Brigade's locally-produced scrip from 1941 belongs to a category of military necessity currency that formal banking histories rarely acknowledge. During the Middle East and Pacific campaigns, Australian brigade-level commands occasionally authorized their own low-denomination canteen and welfare fund tokens — paper scrip issued to control spending within controlled garrison or base environments, preventing coin drainage into local economies and simplifying accounting at unit level.

The 5 Mils denomination places this firmly in a Middle East posting, almost certainly Egypt, Palestine, or Cyrenaica, where the mil was the operative small unit of currency. The orange paper stock was a deliberate denominator color-coding choice, not an aesthetic one.
