Sudan's 1976 coinage was issued under the Nimeiry government during a period of relative political consolidation following the failed communist coup of 1971 and the Addis Ababa Agreement of 1972, which had temporarily ended the first civil war in the south. The Bank of Sudan — established only in 1960 — was still a young institution building out its independent monetary infrastructure when this series was authorized.
The brass composition replaced earlier cupro-nickel issues as part of a broader cost-driven reformulation of the small denomination coinage.
