Obverse description Central device depicts the Sudanese national emblem — a Secretary Bird with wings spread, displayed upon a shield, standing atop a scroll bearing an Arabic legend. The bird is surmounted by a traditional Sudanese head-dress. The FAO slogan legend in Arabic script arcs across the upper field. Dual dates appear flanking the base of the emblem: the Gregorian year to the right and the Hijri year to the left.

Reverse description The large Arabic numeral '٥' (5) occupies the centre of the field in bold relief. Surrounding the numeral is a decorative wreath composed of cotton bolls and floral motifs, evoking Sudan's agricultural heritage in keeping with the FAO theme. The circular legend in Arabic script naming the Democratic Republic of the Sudan arcs around the upper portion of the coin, while the denomination in Arabic script appears at the base below the wreath.
