Sudan's 1956 patterns were produced in anticipation of independence, formally achieved on January 1 of that year when the condominium arrangement with Britain and Egypt dissolved. Several denominations were struck in trial compositions as the new government evaluated its coinage options before committing to a circulating series. The copper-nickel trials were ultimately not adopted for the millieme denominations that entered circulation.
