Sudan's millieme denominations of this period were caught in the slow institutional transition following the country's 1970s push toward Islamic finance, which would eventually force a comprehensive currency overhaul in the early 1980s. The brass composition of this issue replaced an earlier cupro-nickel version — KM#54, without the 'a' suffix — reflecting both metal cost pressures and shifting procurement relationships as Sudan's economy strained under debt and falling cotton revenues.
