Sudan's post-independence coinage underwent a deliberate redesign program in the early 1970s as the country moved to consolidate a distinct national identity following the 1969 coup that brought Jaafar Nimeiry to power. This issue belongs to that transitional series, minted while the regime was still formalizing the institutions of the Democratic Republic of Sudan.
Bronze composition was retained for the lower denominations largely due to import cost constraints — Sudan's economy in this period was heavily dependent on cotton revenues, which had been volatile throughout the preceding decade.
