Sudan's transition to decimal currency came in 1970 when the country replaced the piastre-based pound system, and these bronze milliemes belong to that first decimal coinage series issued under the Bank of Sudan following the 1969 Nimeiry coup. The new government moved quickly to assert its own monetary identity, and fresh coin designs were among the earliest tangible symbols of the May Revolution's authority.
