Obverse description Black intaglio on multicolour lithographic underprint. An oval portrait vignette at left presents José Maria da Silva Paranhos, Barão do Rio Branco (1845–1912), facing slightly right. The denomination numeral '5' appears at each corner, with the issuing authority and statutory legend inscribed across the face, the printer's imprint in the lower margin.
