Obverse description	Printed in brown and black intaglio on cream paper, the obverse carries the heading IMPERIO DO BRAZIL across the top. To the left, an oval portrait vignette contains Emperor Dom Pedro II facing right, flanked at the lower corners by the numeral 5; at centre, a cherub vignette is set within a guilloche panel bearing the promise text and denomination CINCO MIL REIS, while to the right a seated allegorical female figure with shield and lyre occupies a tall vertical vignette surmounted by NO THESOURO NACIONAL. The lower centre field contains Estampa, Serie, and VALOR RECEBIDO panel details.

Reverse description	Printed entirely in golden-brown intaglio, the reverse is covered edge-to-edge with an intricate geometric lathe-work pattern composed of nine symmetrical panels, each enclosing a distinct guilloche rosette or star ornament. The central horizontal band bears the inscription IMPERIO DO BRAZIL flanking a globe device within a circular star border, with the numeral 5 repeated at each lateral extremity. No pictorial vignettes appear; security is achieved entirely through the density and complexity of the engraved guilloche work, with the imprint AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY NEW YORK in small type at the lower margin.
