Banco de Moçambique introduced a redesigned coin series in the 2020s as part of a broader effort to update the metical's circulating coinage following years of currency instability — the metical had been redenominated in 2006 at a rate of 1000 old meticais to one new metical, collapsing accumulated inflation from the civil war period into a cleaner unit. The 2024 date places this piece among the earliest issues of what appears to be a refreshed series.
