Actien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation — better known today as AGFA — issued this Notgeld through its Berlin-Treptow factory during the chronic small-change shortage that followed Germany's defeat. Industrial firms across the country were producing their own emergency scrip at this point, essentially underwriting the wages their workers couldn't otherwise spend. König & Ebhardt in Hannover were among the more capable commercial printers handling this flood of private commissions, and the watermarked paper sets this issue slightly apart from the rougher emergency pieces circulating at the same time.
