Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, facing right, with a full beard and short hair rendered in fine detail. The truncation of the neck is plain and unadorned. A circular legend surrounds the portrait, separated from the rim by a continuous beaded border. The mint mark 'A' appears at the bottom of the field below the bust truncation.
