Obverse description At centre, the state emblem of the German Democratic Republic — a hammer and compass encircled by a wreath of rye — rendered in fine relief against a flat field. The legend 'DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK' arcs along the upper periphery, while the face value '5 MARK' appears in the lower field. The Berlin Mint mark 'A' is positioned to the left and the date '1990' to the right of the emblem.
