Zweibrücken's 5 Mark Notgeld from 1918 is a municipal emergency issue, produced as small-denomination coinage disappeared from circulation during the final year of the First World War. German cities and towns were legally permitted — and practically compelled — to fill the gap themselves, leading to thousands of distinct local issues that flooded the country between 1914 and 1921.

Zweibrücken, a Palatine city with a long history as a ducal residence, issued under its own municipal authority rather than through a savings bank or chamber of commerce, which was the more common arrangement for Bavarian Notgeld of this period.
