Obverse description Cream paper note printed in brown and black within a scalloped outer border enclosing a ruled rectangular field; the denomination '5 Mark' in Gothic Fraktur appears in both upper corners, flanking the years '1267' and '1917' placed symmetrically above the central vignette of the Grünhain town arms — a shield bearing three fir trees surmounted by an eagle — itself flanked by crossed quill-pen vignettes and enclosed within a flowing scroll ribbon carrying the issuer's name. The lower portion contains the commemorative inscription, validity date, issuing authority designation, serial number, and authorising signature, with the printer's imprint at the foot of the note.

Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a woodcut-style panoramic vignette in warm brown tones occupying the central field, reproducing a historical bird's-eye view of the Cistercian monastery of Grünhain in its ruined state as recorded in 1632, captioned in the lower-left quadrant of the image. A period verse in continuous Gothic Fraktur script runs along all four outer margins, encircling the central vignette.
