Reverse description A large crowned imperial eagle with spread wings is depicted in the centre of the reverse, its breast bearing a shield and the overall design rendered in the heraldic style typical of the early German Empire coinage. The legend DEUTSCHES REICH arcs along the upper portion of the coin within a beaded border, with the date 1877 positioned to the right of the eagle. The denomination 5 MARK appears in the lower field, flanked by decorative star stops, completing the standard reverse type common to all German states of this period.
