Reverse description A portrait bust of the Azerbaijani journalist and publicist Hasan bey Zardabi occupies the central field, rendered in a formal engraved style. Encircling the portrait along the upper and lower periphery are his name in Latin script and his birth and death years, 1837–1907. An inscription in the Arabic script records the name of the Akinchi (Əkinçi), the first Azerbaijani-language newspaper, which Zardabi founded, alongside a notation marking the 135th anniversary of its establishment. The reverse commemorates the pivotal role of Zardabi and the Akinchi newspaper in the history of Azerbaijani national press.

Additional information

Issued to mark the 135th anniversary of the Azerbaijani press, this coin commemorates the 1875 founding of Əkinçi ("The Ploughman"), the first Azerbaijani-language newspaper, edited by Hasan bey Zardabi. The publication ran for only three years before Russian imperial authorities shut it down in 1877, making its legacy in Azerbaijani cultural memory considerably larger than its print run would suggest.
