Obverse description The Maltese national coat of arms occupies the centre of the field, depicting a quartered shield bearing a cross and vertical stripes, surmounted by a mural crown with three visible battlemented towers. The shield is flanked by two ornamental branches — an olive branch to the left and a palm branch to the right — tied at the base by a ribbon scroll inscribed 'REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA'. The legend 'MALTA' curves along the upper periphery in large capital letters, and the date '1994' appears in large numerals along the lower periphery.
