Additional information

Sir Themistocles Zammit is best remembered for his excavations at Ħal Saflieni and Tarxien between 1909 and 1920, work that fundamentally reoriented understanding of Maltese prehistory. He was also the chemist who, in 1905, traced the origin of Malta's endemic undulant fever to infected goat's milk — a finding that preceded his archaeological career and arguably saved more lives than any dig.

This 2006 commemorative was issued as part of the Central Bank's ongoing series honoring distinguished Maltese figures ahead of EU accession currency transition. Malta adopted the euro in January 2008, making lira-denominated commemoratives from this period a short final chapter.
