Obverse description Central device depicting a traditional Maltese fishing boat (luzzu) at sea beneath a radiant sun, with an oar and stylized waves in the lower field, evoking the island's maritime heritage. A cactus plant appears to the right of the central scene, adding a Mediterranean naturalistic element. The entire central design is set within a raised inner circle. The circular legend reads REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA in raised Latin lettering along the upper periphery, with the date 1986 positioned at the base between two raised dots.

Additional information

Dwejra on Gozo's western coast was the subject of two separate 5 Liri commemorative silver issues, this being the second. Malta's commemorative silver program of the 1980s was closely tied to the government's effort to build foreign exchange reserves through numismatic sales, a strategy aggressively pursued by the Central Bank following the 1979 severance of the island's financial relationship with Britain and Libya.

KM#86 is frequently confused with its predecessor in dealer listings. The two issues share the Dwejra subject but differ in design treatment — distinguishing them by KM number rather than description alone is advisable.
