Malta adopted the Maltese lira as its currency in 1972, replacing the pound at par, and this series — issued from 1994 and remaining legal tender until euro changeover on 1 January 2008 — represents the final generation of lira banknotes the Central Bank ever produced. De La Rue's involvement throughout the lira era was consistent; the 1994 redesign introduced upgraded security elements in response to improvements in desktop scanning and colour reproduction technology that had made earlier series increasingly vulnerable.

At changeover, unredeemed lira notes of this type remained exchangeable at the Central Bank at the fixed conversion rate of MTL 0.4293 per euro for a period after circulation ended.
