San Marino's annual coinage program in the late 1980s operated under a treaty arrangement with Italy that capped total mintage and restricted circulation to the republic's territory — a practical consequence of which is that most pieces from this period were absorbed immediately by collectors and never saw a day's use. The 1989 aluminum 5 Lire is no exception.
